Announcement: Transitions to Worker Ownership model in commemoration of International Workers’ Day 2026

Charlotte, NC — May 1st, 2026 — Renegade Co-op, an NC-based provider of election software & services for campaigns and progressive organizations, today announced that it has transitioned to a worker-owned cooperative.

Previously operated under single-owner control, Renegade Co-op is now collectively owned and governed by its workers.

Mike Huttman, original co-founder of Renegade Squirrel, shared this statement:

"By converting to a worker-owned cooperative, we are becoming a five-member team with worker-owners bringing together a wide range of skill sets. We have deep knowledge of the political campaign landscape and together are prepared to help Progressive campaigns build electoral power up-and-down the ballot."

"We are proud to re-organize on International Workers' Day in solidarity with all laborers who are standing for the rights of workers. With Renegade Co-op we are putting our values into practice. As a worker-owned cooperative, each member of our team shares ownership and responsibility over the business. We are removing the hierarchy and uneven power structure inherent in typical corporate structures. We hope that by setting an example we can help democracy spread to more workplaces throughout North Carolina."

In addition, the organization announced Chattr, a peer-to-peer text banking tool currently in development and planned for release later this summer. Chattr is being built to support campaign outreach efforts through deep integration with the voter file. More details TBA.

These updates reflect the organization's continued focus on delivering practical tools for campaigns while aligning its internal structure with the values of the people it serves.
